Keyon Harrold - Live at New Morning, Paris

When producers were looking for someone to play Miles Davis's trumpet parts in the 2015 biopic Miles Ahead, they likely had many options but went with Keyon Harrold. Not just because he could play the music but also because he embodies the legend's far-ranging tastes, exploratory nature and focus. Not many musicians can thrive under diverse and demanding bosses like Beyoncé and Charles Tolliver. This highly intimate concert recording was made in 2024 at the famed Parisian club New Morning. If you've ever dreamed of being part of a hip jazz band, the tight camera shots from all over the stage will make you feel like a sixth member alongside the leader, Daniel Winshall (electric bass), Andrew Renfroe (guitar), Chad Selph (keyboard) and Kaylen Pentinaud (drums). Starting mid-set with "Gotta Go (Outer Space)", the quintet is full of cosmic groove, Harrold commanding the group much like Miles once did. He greets the packed house with the request: "I want you to just vibe with us", before explaining the next tune, "Well Walk Now", as one of hope and perseverance. Throughout the show, Harrold showcases his R&B-tinged vocals, as burnished and expressive as his trumpet playing. \tHarrold's band is tight and can move from gentle waves to full funk tsunami, from a street party to a church service. Most of the music comes from his third album Foreverland, just released at the time. With Harrold's music as its national anthem, it sounds like a great place to visit and stay awhile. Jamaican music, largely nourished by soul, first garnered wide attention through its splendid vocal trios. Modeled after American groups such as The Impressions or the Four Tops, these ensembles had their moment of glory in the mid-sixties with rocksteady vocal groups such as The Paragons and The Techniques, and then in the following decade with reggae groups such as The Abyssinians and The Wailers. Picked up in their day by dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, The Gladiators embody the unique liveliness of the trio format. Bassist and singer Clinton Fearon is the driving force of this brilliant trio, and has since enjoyed a successful solo career. With an impressive discography behind him, Fearon takes to the studio here for a new Analogue session. Backed by a solid line-up of musicians, the Rastafarian creator kicks off this recording with “Where Do We Go.” Anchored by a steely rhythm (the keystone of reggae), the track immediately stands out with its mystical dimension. The equally powerful “Let It Grow” unveils an ethereal composition. This joyful performance is carried by an unstoppable introduction on guitar. Aretha Franklin - Live in Paris

Aretha Franklin sets the Paris Palais des Sports on fire in 1977. Aretha Franklin’s entrance on the Paris stage is made with great fanfare, complete with bombastic introduction by the orchestra and sequin gown for the diva. She opens her arms wide before the public, as if to say, "Here I am!" Except for a little bit of larsen effect in the beginning, the concert starts off with a bang. Discovered by producer John H. Hammond (who also helped spark the careers of Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, among others), she became a star in the late fifties, first with Columbia Records (1956–1966), which wanted to groom her as a jazz singer, and then on the Atlantic label (1967–1979), which saw her potential in soul and R&B. This isn’t her Parisian premiere. In 1977, Franklin arrives on the heels of a highly successful stint that saw her initial hits, including Respect, Think and I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You). Already dubbed the "Queen of Soul," she has been racking up Grammys for nearly ten years (the first coming in 1968). She has some thirty albums to her credit, including *Amazing Grace* (1972), which would become one of the best-selling gospel albums in the world. Onstage at the Palais des Sports in Paris, she demonstrates her cultural range, not hesitating to navigate everything from an enticing cover of La vie en rose to classics like Singing in the Rain, accompanied by full orchestra and three backing vocalists.
