Earth, Wind & Fire Experience

Für diese Show, Earth, Wind & Fire Experience, bringt McKay drei Sänger (die auch tanzen), vier Bläser, zwei Keyboards und eine Rhythmusgruppe mit Percussion, Bass und Schlagzeug auf die Bühne. Es ist eine Orgie des Soul mit dem funkigen Rhythmus von McKays Wah-Wah-Gitarre. Von der Süße von "Sun Goddess" bis zum mitreißenden Rhythmus von "Jupiter" ist das Konzert ein grandioses musikalisches Eintauchen in eine ganze Ära. Obwohl die Jahre vergangen sind, beweist McKay, dass diese Musik nichts von ihrer Kraft verloren hat.

Aretha Franklin - Live in Paris

Aretha Franklin sets the Paris Palais des Sports on fire in 1977. Aretha Franklin’s entrance on the Paris stage is made with great fanfare, complete with bombastic introduction by the orchestra and sequin gown for the diva. She opens her arms wide before the public, as if to say, "Here I am!" Except for a little bit of larsen effect in the beginning, the concert starts off with a bang. Discovered by producer John H. Hammond (who also helped spark the careers of Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, among others), she became a star in the late fifties, first with Columbia Records (1956–1966), which wanted to groom her as a jazz singer, and then on the Atlantic label (1967–1979), which saw her potential in soul and R&B. This isn’t her Parisian premiere. In 1977, Franklin arrives on the heels of a highly successful stint that saw her initial hits, including Respect, Think and I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You). Already dubbed the "Queen of Soul," she has been racking up Grammys for nearly ten years (the first coming in 1968). She has some thirty albums to her credit, including *Amazing Grace* (1972), which would become one of the best-selling gospel albums in the world. Onstage at the Palais des Sports in Paris, she demonstrates her cultural range, not hesitating to navigate everything from an enticing cover of La vie en rose to classics like Singing in the Rain, accompanied by full orchestra and three backing vocalists. Exhibiting an abundance of energy and numerous wardrobe changes, Franklin is a seasoned performer. The cheers of the audience are proof! Florent Servia.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Es war auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer späten Karriere - und nur zwei Jahre vor ihrem plötzlichen Tod (2016) – als die Sängerin Sharon Jones begleitet von ihren treuen Dap-Kings den ausverkauften Pariser Konzertsaal Olympia nochmal richtig einheizte. Soul, Funk, Rhythm & Blues und sogar einige köstliche Tanzstunden wurden mit einer Großzügigkeit, Klasse und Humor dargeboten, die die Konzerte dieser großen Persönlichkeit der afroamerikanischen Musik so auszeichneten.

Summer Pearl - Live at Moods

A veritable center of rhythms and cultures, the English music scene of the last thirty years offers an unparalleled musical kaleidoscope. This includes, of course, trip-hop with its direct link to Jamaican sound systems, as well as a significant proportion of jazz, which is closely associated with Afro-Caribbean repertoires and clubbing. Tastefully relayed by DJ-producers such as Gilles Peterson and Don Letts, this unique artistic hub now exerts its influence on a wide range of musical styles such as rock and pop. Recording her album Outmysystem alongside the brilliant Liam Bailey, or performing at the prestigious Montreux Festival with a cover of the Gershwin brothers' “Summertime,” Summer Pearl is the very embodiment of this artistic diversity. Performing here at Zürich's Moods Club, the singer delivers an explosive yet coherent mix of nu-soul, improvised chords and swaying rhythms. Her cover of “War,” a Bob Marley song inspired by a historic speech by Haile Selassie, is a particular testament to this. Backed by some excellent musicians, the performer reveals her powerful, sophisticated vocals, as evidenced by the high-energy finale. Vincent Caffiaux.

Kenny Larkin & Truffaz play Miles

Der Techno-Pionier Kenny Larkin der Second-Wave-Bewegung aus Detroit und der Schweizer Jazztrompeter Erik Truffaz bilden ein faszinierendes Team als Hommage an die Musik von Miles Davis. Diese Duo-Performance, durchdrungen von Kraft, Groove und Sinnlichkeit, markiert den Beginn der zweiten Saison der "Variations"-Reihe im Jahr 2017, die Tribute-Konzerte zwischen elektronischen Produzenten und klassischen Instrumentalisten bietet.

Ray Charles - Salle Pleyel, Paris

Dieses im Herbst 68 im Salle Pleyel aufgenommene Konzert fasst die bereits weit vorangeschrittene Laufbahn von Ray Charles zusammen. Gemeinsam mit Susaye Greene entwickelte der Pianist einen gelinde gesagt subtilen Spielstil. Eine Oase für die Choristin, die hier den Gipfel der Anmut erreicht. Und schließlich glänzt die 1959er Version des Gründers von What'd I Say mit groovigem Piano, thermonuklearen Bläsern und besessenem Gesang.

Billy Harper Quintet - Live at Unterfahrt Jazz Club, Munich

Tough Texan tenor saxophonist Billy Harper is now one of the old guard of powerful soloists, although he has arguably not attained the high international profile that he deserves. He’s well-known to both American and European audiences as a key member of The Cookers, a brilliant New York jazz supergroup, playing in the brashly groovin’ style, vibrating with classic post-1960s themes. Harper also released LPs on the lately-revivified Strata-East label, and worked with drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach, as well as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Here, at one of Germany’s key jazz clubs, the tenorman sets Munich afire with his regular quintet line-up. Harper first formed a quintet way back in 1979. This Unterfahrt performance isn’t loaded with dramatic moves or kinetic stage movement, but Harper leads a foray into a strongly confident force of expressive playing, full of solos from the band, fronted by his beaming confidence as a soloist. This aura and passion runs throughout an extensive 90 minute-plus set, with no lessening of empowered heat. Harper even conducts a question-and-answer session with the audience, supplying some added nuggets of information about the jazzing life. As a kid, he asked Santa Claus for a pony and a saxophone, but only had one of those desires fulfilled. Popping fizz-climber trumpeter Freddie Hendrix also dazzles with his raw virtuosity, as a soloing foil, clearly moved by the music even when he’s not playing, as he dances or gestures to the rest of the band. Drummer Aaron Scott is constantly in motion, tumbling around the skins, or splashing the cymbals. The tunes are mostly long, climbing up to 18 minutes. Harper drapes himself in a weighty-looking leather apron, futuristic enough for David Lynch’s Dune movie, or for placement in a Moebius or Bilal comic book extravaganza. Martin Longley.

Le Trio Joubran “20 Printemps” - Live at La Halle aux Grains, Toulouse

Descendants of a rich musical dynasty, Samir, Wissam and Adnan Joubran have been offering a modern interpretation of the oud for the past two decades. These virtuosos are deeply versed in Oriental traditions and freely inject improvisation into their compositions, as showcased in their 2011 album AsFâr – a sophisticated gem released by World Village. Ambassadors of Palestinian culture on the global stage, the brothers take their music to the next level through collaborations with artists such as Pink Floyd’s iconic bassist Roger Waters and members of Coldplay on the powerful track “Arabesque.” Their work has also featured in film, including the soundtrack to Karim Dridi’s Le Dernier Vol. Recorded at La Halle aux Grains concert hall in Toulouse, France, the album 20 Printemps celebrates their artistic journey with remarkable brilliance. Accompanied by a string quartet and two percussionists, Le Trio Joubran delivers a mesmerizing performance. Beautifully staged, this show captures the spirit of the ensemble. The oud passages are strikingly original, while the addition of violins and cello enriches the music. The group’s collaboration with the poet Mahmoud Darwich is projected onto a large screen, with translations of the texts accompanying the visuals. Filmed in its entirety, this stunning exploration of Levantine musical heritage bends space and time, resulting in a moment of universal resonance: this is true art. Vincent Caffiaux.

Magic Slim - Live at Jazz à Vienne Festival

In this historic appearance of a bona fide Chicago blues master, Magic Slim wows the Jazz à Vienne Festival in 2012 with killer, spark-charged guitar and a deep soulful gritty voice. The six-feet-tall fiery roots artist tells the standing crowd, “I’m a blues man,” and opens the trio Teardrops show with the grooving “Living in My Neighborhood.” He sits on a chair and starts the set with a long solo before belting out the song. He encourages people to clap to his sluggish beat and sing along with him throughout the robust evening whether it’s about celebrating gin or hitchhiking to his birthplace in the rhythm-driven “Going Back to Mississippi.“ (Side note: Slim is delivering his guitar mastery even though he’s missing his right-hand little finger that he lost in a cotton gin accident.) The highlight comes with his rowdy run through the classic “Mustang Sally.” The frequent winner of the W.C. Handy best blues band of the year, Magic Slim actually made a name for himself in blues-loving Europe. Sadly, this date at the Jazz à Vienne Festival was among his last shows. He died in Philadelphia on February 21, 2013 at age 75. Dan Ouellette.
